Here's some free effects I programmed for use especially with Ardour2/LADSPA on Linux. Linux makes a great affordable home studio platform if you can get it to work well. All my music recordings since 2003 or so are done using Linux, Ardour, and Rosegarden LEET Plugins on Google code: http://code.google.com/p/leetplugins/
